What to do?

Let's say you really wanted to do this one really cool thing in the future, but in this moment you're unable to (albeit for whatever reason). Then, let's say there's a chance that when that something comes around, you will be able to do it... but there are no guarantees in this moment. And, to further complex the issue, the thing is, you have to spend a lot of money and do a bunch of stuff preparing for that thing way in advance... like right now. Would you prepare for that something you want to do so badly, knowing that it might all be in vain? Or would you wait a year or two?
